Overview

Under the direction of the Director of Pharmacy, this position will provide support to the clinical pharmacists at the Medication Adherence and Centralized Prescription Renewal Unit in managing the refill authorization process using approved guidelines and protocols.

 

The Medication Adherence and Centralized Prescription Renewal Unit delivers enhanced refill and medication management services and improves operational efficiencies. This team will be based at the Monterey Park office and will receive phone call, faxes, and other forms of communication to process requests for prescription renewal. There is no a pharmacy located at this site, and handling of drugs is not within the scope of this role.

 

Responsibilities

  1. Assists in all aspects of processing prescription refill authorization requests
  2. Receives customer/pharmacy/patient calls in a courteous manner
  3. Gathers appropriate contact information from caller and updates electronic medical record with appropriate call details
  4. Under protocol, gathers information from electronic medical record regarding previous medication refills, previous and pending primary care provider appointments
  5. Assesses medication for inclusion in developed prescription refill center authorization protocol and refills medication following protocol criteria
  6. Attempts to solve medication issues, including prior authorization forms, sending messages to providers via the electronic health record system for outstanding office visits, lab work, or contacting providers/clinics directly for questions
  7. Forwards refill request to clinical pharmacist for approval or further review if refill criteria is not met per protocol
  8. Contacts patients to initiate or provide reminder for follow-up lab visits or office visits
  9. Provides documentation in medical record and communication to prescriber as per prescription refill protocol.
  10. Maintains appropriate communications with patients to update on progress and status of request
  11. Plays a key role in maintaining a high level of patient satisfaction by providing patients with exceptional customer service and serving as the liaison between patients, physicians and pharmacies
  12. Performs other duties as required.

Qualifications

  1. High school graduate or equivalent
  2. Pharmacy Technician certification
  3. Minimum 1 year of experience as a pharmacy technician
  4. Bilingual English/Spanish preferred
